POWERPUFF GIRLS creator Craig McCracken takes his widely popular characters--Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and their posse--and kicks it up a few notches with a stylish look that's easy on the eyes and engaging to all audiences. The film begins with a flashback to the POWERPUFF GIRLS' early days, when they were but a glimmer in the eye of their father-creator Professor Plutonium. The three girls--who are cute to the point of distraction--are not the pride of Townsville like they are on TV. They are persecuted as "freaks" because they cannot control their special powers. Who could have predicted that a nuclear-powered game of tag would wreak havoc on Townsville? It's clear that the girls must redeem themselves, so they turn to the evil Mojo Jojo, unaware that he's the evil ape they will come to know and hate later. The animation's retro 1950s lounge-style background art, its impossibly vibrant and often-changing colors, and its eerie 3-D effects create a pleasingly cinematic feel. The result is a deeper, resonating picture. The filmmakers did not abandon the naïve style that gave the original POWERPUFF GIRLS television show its trademark charm, making the movie all the better. Reviews for The Powerpuff Girls Movie
An entertaining romp that stays true to the material's television roots, this film is a good starting point for viewers unfamiliar with the series.
A confluence of kiddie entertainment, sophisticated wit and symbolic graphic design.
It's still a kick seeing the show's retro-cool, Hanna-Barbera-style animation blown up to 35 mm, even if The Powerpuff Girls Movie only plays like a long, slightly average episode.
From the action to the characters to the humor, it's one of the brightest entries in this summer's family-movie showdown.
Filled with clever writing, pop-culture references galore and ultrastylized art direction.
This movie is one of the few American creations that is both gleeful pop culture and exquisite high art.
They’re the Powerpuff Girls! And they’re here to save the summer from lousy family entertainment.
...a good, moral film for kids and a fun piece of colorful entertainment for everyone else.
Even with its flaws, The Powerpuff Girls Movie offers cleverness and charm that are hard to come by in the summertime multiplex.
It certainly won't win any awards in the plot department but it sets out with no pretensions and delivers big time.
Mojo JoJo says, "Origin movies bore me. Films that speak to the beginnings of superheroism cause sleep. Powerpuffs are more interesting when they are fighting bad guys, not being created, so this film made my lids heavy."
Relying on the Cartoon Network series' signature fast-paced, eye-pleasing animation and smart humor, The Powerpuff Girls Movie manages to entertain despite its redundant plot.
It soars visually but remains narratively earthbound...a good picture which, with more clever plotting, could have been an outstanding one.
The rest of this playful full-length Powerpuff confection isn't deep, but it is enjoyable.
A piquant entertainment and zeitgeist reflector designed to embolden little thrashettes (and thrashettes-at-heart) while giving an adult male critic license to spew sociopolitical balderdash.
This Cartoon Network feature-length animation manages to teach kids some good lessons and amuse the grown-ups without overdosing on pop-culture references.
How can anyone resist a cartoon in which the arch enemy of three crime-fighting schoolkids is a monkey called Mojo Jojo?
Jam-packed with perils and parodies, "PowerPuff" will be best-appreciated by moviegoers with a high tolerance for mayhem and unrestrained goofiness. ...It's Saturday morning TV meets "Saturday Night Live."
