POWERPUFF GIRLS creator Craig McCracken takes his widely popular characters--Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and their posse--and kicks it up a few notches with a stylish look that's easy on the eyes and engaging to all audiences. The film begins with a flashback to the POWERPUFF GIRLS' early days, when they were but a glimmer in the eye of their father-creator Professor Plutonium. The three girls--who are cute to the point of distraction--are not the pride of Townsville like they are on TV. They are persecuted as "freaks" because they cannot control their special powers. Who could have predicted that a nuclear-powered game of tag would wreak havoc on Townsville? It's clear that the girls must redeem themselves, so they turn to the evil Mojo Jojo, unaware that he's the evil ape they will come to know and hate later. The animation's retro 1950s lounge-style background art, its impossibly vibrant and often-changing colors, and its eerie 3-D effects create a pleasingly cinematic feel. The result is a deeper, resonating picture. The filmmakers did not abandon the naïve style that gave the original POWERPUFF GIRLS television show its trademark charm, making the movie all the better. Reviews for The Powerpuff Girls Movie
This movie is one of the few American creations that is both gleeful pop culture and exquisite high art.
Retro fun that contains a serious self-empowerment message for little girls and little boys alike, this is brilliant, wacky, and utterly charming fluff.
Grown-up quibbles are beside the point here. The little girls understand, and McCracken knows that's all that matters.
A confluence of kiddie entertainment, sophisticated wit and symbolic graphic design.
This Cartoon Network feature-length animation manages to teach kids some good lessons and amuse the grown-ups without overdosing on pop-culture references.
It's great fun, turning sci-fi and kiddie-show conventions upside down with a hip wink, but even with more time to go deeper with a plot line, there's not quite enough here to make it special enough for moviegoing.
Powerpuff Girls, the movie, could use a little more power and a lot less puff in its storyline.
Filled with clever writing, pop-culture references galore and ultrastylized art direction.
There's wicked delight in a children's film that's leftfield humour is this detached from the dumbed-down cultural status-quo.
It certainly turns out to be a worthy effort, even if (as with many spin-offs of boob tube fodder) it doesn't quite sustain its feature-film length.
A rather brilliant little cult item: a pastiche of children’s entertainment, superhero comics, and Japanese animation.
