POWERPUFF GIRLS creator Craig McCracken takes his widely popular characters--Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and their posse--and kicks it up a few notches with a stylish look that's easy on the eyes and engaging to all audiences. The film begins with a flashback to the POWERPUFF GIRLS' early days, when they were but a glimmer in the eye of their father-creator Professor Plutonium. The three girls--who are cute to the point of distraction--are not the pride of Townsville like they are on TV. They are persecuted as "freaks" because they cannot control their special powers. Who could have predicted that a nuclear-powered game of tag would wreak havoc on Townsville? It's clear that the girls must redeem themselves, so they turn to the evil Mojo Jojo, unaware that he's the evil ape they will come to know and hate later. The animation's retro 1950s lounge-style background art, its impossibly vibrant and often-changing colors, and its eerie 3-D effects create a pleasingly cinematic feel. The result is a deeper, resonating picture. The filmmakers did not abandon the naïve style that gave the original POWERPUFF GIRLS television show its trademark charm, making the movie all the better. This Cartoon Network feature-length animation manages to teach kids some good lessons and amuse the grown-ups without overdosing on pop-culture references. Full Review |

Utilising the cheapest-looking animation ever to grace a cinema screen, this Cartoon Network spin-off will only appeal to a fraction of pre-teen girls. Full Review |

Stretched beyond its usual episode length, the Girls' adventure doesn't pack the nifty punch they're famous for. Full Review |

There's nothing particularly clever or interesting here, no plot element that requires stretching a 20-minute cartoon to 87 minutes on the screen. Full Review |

Sure, there's plenty of wacky energy, but if you look even a little closely there's nothing else at all. Full Review |

If you like the TV show, you'll like this, though you might feel it's a bit too much of a usually-good thing. Full Review |
