A naturalistic dramatization of record breaking distance runner Steve Prefontaine's struggle to win, culminating in the 1972 Munich Olympics, this film favors documentary-style character development more than conventional "sports film" hero worship. A feature-film breakthrough for director James and co-producer/cinematographer Peter Gilbert (the creative team behind HOOP DREAMS), as well as star Leto, previously known as the hunky Jordan Catalano on TV's "My So-Called Life." • Prefontaine
  • Inspirational and entertaining, PREFONTAINE is another acclaimed success from the makers of HOOP DREAMS. It's the true-life story of legendary track star Steve Prefontaine, the exciting and sometimes controversial "James Dean of Track," whose spirit captured the heart of the nation! Cocky, charismatic, and tough, "Pre" was a running rebel who defied rules, pushed limits ... and smashed records ... in an incredible against-all-odds quest for Olympic gold! Now a major motion picture, the triumphs and heartbreaks of this unforgettable champion will have you riveted from beginning to end!

Steve Prefontaine must have been something special -- everyone says so -- but there's no magic on the screen.

With its moving final scenes and well-developed subject, the story of Steve Prefontaine is a decidedly well-told American tale.

A reasonably good retelling of the life story of Steve Prefontaine.

A touching, poignant movie with a great performance by Leto

The film is refreshingly unsentimental, intelligent, and compelling (the race scenes areparticularly effective: even if you know the outcomes, these function as mini-dramas in themselves).

As the handsome Leto becomes more comfortable in the role, James begins to let loose his filmmaking skills, deftly weaving precise period re-creations and documentary footage to add dimension and humanity to Prefontaine.

Even through Prefontaine's obviousness, we feel its force.

James tries too hard to bring closure to Pre's life, and, as a result, strays a little too far into melodrama. The tearful reminiscences at the end, not to mention some of the stuff at the funeral, lay it on thickly.

Ultimately, the script doesn't give us any real insights into Prefontaine's prickly personality or show us why he needed to prove himself.

Though it is always pleasant and agreeable, this film has the bland and undemanding texture that characterizes movies made for network TV.

Nothing more than a glorified, profanity-sprinkled made-for-TV movie, from the cast right down to the shallow treatment of its subject.

The Super-16mm film stock gives the film a grainy look that blends in artfully with the vintage videotape of ABC's '72 Olympics coverage.
