With 10 quality shorts, the series includes both comedic and dramatic pieces, trading off between shorts whose primary concern are plot and characterization and those that place striking visual content as their primary objective. Running 20 minutes in length, the captivating sci-fi time-travel drama BOBBIE LOVES MANGOS is a definite series heavy. German-made FREE PARKING is an enjoyable short about aggressive urbanites fighting for a parking space, though out of place in terms of its limited scope and standard cinematic style. IN GOD WE TRUST is a slick comedy along the lines of HEAVEN CAN WAIT, while MUTUAL LOVE LIFE offers an SNL-style piece of sketch comedy. ENDGAME combines stylized production design with voice-over in a style reminiscent of Jane Campion's and Peter Greenaway's early films. The appeal of the Mexican short MIRROR IN THE SKY lies in its beautiful cinematography, while production design and photography combine perfectly to create the gorgeous Belgian short GREY. The 3-D animated PLUG is great eye and ear candy, surpassed in beauty only by MAAZ, whose haunting digitized landscape references German expressionist classics. The selection is rounded out by actress Sara Polley's directorial debut, DON'T THINK TWICE. Among all this fine work, PREMIERE FILMS offers something for everyone. [More]
