Free spirit Sonia longs to escape the restrictions of the community into which she was born--the tiny, hermetic cultural circle of the Brooklyn Hasidim--and rebels against her erudite but emotionally cold arranged husband by initiating two affairs: one with his jeweler brother, and one with a Puerto Rican outsider whose experience of life is miles apart from hers. Less an exploration of the conflicts between Hasidic tradition and modernity than a standard story of self-realization. [More]

Reviews for A Price Above Rubies
Yakin's argument is presented with such blind rage and fury that his little film goes from sensitive and perceptive to sensational and scandal-mongering very quickly
A Price Above Rubies would have more impact if filmmaker Boaz Yakin didn't allow its energy level to sag in several scenes, and if he avoided some lapses into Hollywood-style sensationalism.
Yakin dares to not only enter that neighborhood, but to find beauty and sadness in it, rather than something alien or foreign.
Thanks to Boaz (Fresh) Yorkin, we now have Bye, Bye, Hasid or better yet Escape from the Tefillin.
Yakin cleverly introduces elements of magic realism in an otherwise starkly real, modern allegory.
With its coldly antiseptic tone, the movie seems more interested in preaching awkwardly to the audience that inviting it in.
