Hypnotizing German actress Franka Potente (RUN LOLA RUN, BLOW) stars opposite deft, volatile newcomer Benno Furmann. Using beautiful visuals involving ice cubes, underwater bubbles, rain, and the well-worn buildings of Wuppertal, Tykwer implements his signature filming style--a roving, curious, rapid camera that examines its subjects in extreme close up, follows letters into mailboxes, and soars over the nighttime city like a bird. The musical score and the impeccable use of sound complete the film's sensory excellence. Bodo (Furmann) and Sissi (Potente) come together under strange circumstances: at the scene of an accident where Bodo saves Sissi's life after she is run over by a truck. Then he disappears. Sissi returns to her little room in the nursing ward of a psychiatric hospital where she works with mentally ill patients, one of whom is her own father. However, she cannot forget the man that saved her and has a powerful feeling that her life is inherently connected with his. Unable to pick up her life where she left it before the accident, she seeks out Bodo, who lives in a dilapidated house with his brother, and quickly establishes a steadfast bond with him. [More]

Reviews for The Princess and The Warrior
If a love miracle is happening in Wuppertal, it's fatally swamped by laborious delaying tactics and glum-glam affectations.
A highly imaginative effort which is grounded in the reality of being disturbed.
This unconventional love-and-crime yarn will give [Tykwer's] admirers plenty of food for thought.
The Princess and The Warrior is not without strangely interesting characters or scenes, but the overall effect is disappointing and glum.
Run Lola Run had a good beat, and you could dance to it. The Princess and the Warrior, on the other hand, is a little turgid.
Twyker manages to make a bank robbery sequence, complete with gunshots and death, endlessly dull.
Princess is an exercise in languorousness, with each scene sauntering along with the energy of a three-toed sloth on codeine.
Princess and the Warrior is a botch, but it's the kind of bad movie that can only happen to a good-and potentially great-filmmaker.
Despite its storytelling skill and shimmering visual polish, The Princess and the Warrior is a curiously dispassionate film.
A heady yet disciplined work, a dazzling fable of love, destiny and redemption.
Princess won't leave you as breathless as did Lola's, but that doesn't make it any less astonishing a trip.
