See, it's snips of reviews like this that make me think that general media hates the general public. The snip here misses two key points in the review: the story is a knowing commentary of all such tales, and the film does exude a certain innocent, unassertive charm.
It's a satire. Some of its humor is GOING to be forced and obvious. The movie takes great joy in this, even making fun of itself with exaggerated gusto. It's still a classic, and one of the funniest movies ever made.
Besides, despite all of the faults you cite, this movie still manages to be classier than just about anything on the screen today.
I wonder if film critics ever watch movies for the sheer joy of it.
True love doesn't always have to be intelligent or as rational as you would have it, which is exactly what this classic romantic comedy sets out to do. Maybe you thought it was obvious because you read the book first, but don't take it out on a undeniably good story.
