The film is so carelessly made that every surprise in the story is given away very early on--we know from the beginning exactly what will happen, and scenes are so badly staged that any comic or dramatic potential is lost.
Slugs through its almost two hour running time.

Top Critic"The Princess Diaries" requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, and if an audience isn't willing to go there, then the film simply doesn't work.
Despite two decent performances from Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, this harmless, recyclable comedy by Garry Marshall can't help but deliver the same old thing, in the same old way, with little spark and even less believability.
A very watchable, very warm little Disney comedy.
As far out of the intended demographic as I am, I have to admit there were certain pleasures to the movie.
Most of the plotting and situations are trite.
Those in the target audience will love it.
The Princess may need a therapist not a diary when everyone is finished with her.

It is a charming bit of fluff, aimed at younger audiences, but there is not much cleverness to it and it is sloppily constructed.
As slick, professional and bland as anything else Garry Marshall has directed in recent years, including 1999's Runaway Bride and The Other Sister. He doesn't do edgy.

its very unhipness is part of its charm
A non-animated G-rated movie is a rarity these days but the rating here reflects the fact that all the guts, all the good stuff, has been exorcised from the finished product.
If your child's insecure about her appearance, don't take her-it'll teach her that she's not valuable unless groomed,beautiful,self-sacrificing, & well mannered.
A modest, enjoyable fairy tale that easily outcharms its animated stablemates of the past decade.
A charming story that transcends gender and age entertaining with sprightly ease.
