Assisted by such seasoned pros as Julie Andrews and Hector Elizondo (a Marshall regular), Hathaway shines here in her first major film role. She plays Mia, a high school misfit who has resigned herself to social invisibility. Mia and her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo), are outcasts. While Lilly relishes the role, Mia just wishes a cute popular boy she likes, Josh (Erik von Detten), would notice her. Mia's life changes dramatically when her grandmother (Andrews) contacts her and Mia finds out she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a small European country between France and Spain. The klutzy, socially awkward girl doesn't think she's up to the job, but she agrees to be coached in regal manners by her grandmother before deciding if she wants to become a princess. Marshall (PRETTY WOMAN) is clearly in his element directing this light, charming teen comedy. Andrews, perfectly cast as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, makes her character seem both imperious and caring. Hathaway's performance and the presence of teen pop star Mandy Moore assure that young girls, in particular, will enjoy the film. [More]

Does raise a lot of decent if familiar themes, exploring teen self-awareness, self-consciousness, friendship, ego and the like.

All young girls are princesses inside, although many don't know it and some never will. The more movies that let us in on this wonderful secret, the better.

Only Anne Hathaway’s charisma and a cute script save this movie from becoming completely painful.

Andrews is delightful as the imperious Clarisse, whose posture could shame a T-square, and Hathaway and Matarazzo are a refreshing change of pace.

It's just too bad that the filmmakers didn't pay more attention to delivering a well-made and at least somewhat original film that everyone could simultaneously enjoy and appreciate from a crowd-pleasing and artistic standpoint.

Hardly a cross-dressing update of My Fair Lady. But in its own blanded-down fashion, it captures just enough of that show's metamorphic zest to make you wish it were.

Surprisingly little time is spent mining the comic potential of Mia's education, with the comedy rationed in favour of a tiresome amount of attention lavished on her ongoing school problems.
