Assisted by such seasoned pros as Julie Andrews and Hector Elizondo (a Marshall regular), Hathaway shines here in her first major film role. She plays Mia, a high school misfit who has resigned herself to social invisibility. Mia and her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo), are outcasts. While Lilly relishes the role, Mia just wishes a cute popular boy she likes, Josh (Erik von Detten), would notice her. Mia's life changes dramatically when her grandmother (Andrews) contacts her and Mia finds out she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a small European country between France and Spain. The klutzy, socially awkward girl doesn't think she's up to the job, but she agrees to be coached in regal manners by her grandmother before deciding if she wants to become a princess. Marshall (PRETTY WOMAN) is clearly in his element directing this light, charming teen comedy. Andrews, perfectly cast as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, makes her character seem both imperious and caring. Hathaway's performance and the presence of teen pop star Mandy Moore assure that young girls, in particular, will enjoy the film. [More]

Reviews for The Princess Diaries
One cannot dismiss a movie in which Andrews, that rare woman in the Hollywood garden of girls, reminds us that bell-like enunciation, unfailing politeness and proud posture are markers of self-respect accessible to all, whether commoners or royalty.
The flaws in The Princess Diaries' dated story line are numerous and irritating, its message about physical beauty is frustrating, and you might want to think twice before taking any curly-haired, eyeglass-wearing child to see it.
The story it tells is distressingly out of date, especially in its antique notions of what constitutes "success" for girls.
It’s not grand cinema, but it is an enjoyable confection that will give some families an excuse to spend some time together.
Not as sophisticated as Pretty Woman, but much more interesting than Bride.
The film's San Francisco locale looks great, and the movie has random moments of sparkle. But it reeks of familiarity.
The film is fun, though it's easy to imagine a fresher, lighter version without Marshall's heavy showbiz hand.
Andrews' performance is the spoon full of sugar that helps this medicine go down.
It's solid target-audience entertainment, but it's also all-too-sappy filmmaking.
This is a great big luscious lollypop of a movie, terrific fun for girls of any age and for their families, too.
The Princess Diaries isn't always perfect. But it fills an empty spot in the hearts of girls of all ages who have been pining all summer for a movie like this.
This innocuous, frothy fairy tale isn't so off-putting as you might imagine, thanks in large part to Andrews' ageless charm.
To be effective, many movies require the viewer to engage in a willing suspension of disbelief. For The Princess Diaries to work, the viewer will have to engage in a willing suspension of higher brain activity.
