While protecting his village from a rampaging boar-god, the warrior Ashitaka (Billy Crudup) is cursed with a rapidly spreading scar that threatens to end his life. Seeking a cure and a reason for the animal-god's attack, he journeys into the sacred depths of the Great Forest Spirit's realm. On the edge of this once serene forest, however, the Tatara clan have begun to destroy the surrounding land to produce iron. In retaliation, San (Claire Danes), the adopted daughter of the wolf-god Moro (Gillian Anderson), has begun raiding the Tatara fortress to stop their encroachment. Soon Ashitaka is caught in the middle and must stop the war between the humans and the forest dwellers before they destroy each other. Miyazaki, who was personally responsible for 80,000 of the film's 144,000 hand drawings, uses the story's lush feudal setting as a character unto itself, filling the screen with vast mountainous landscapes and gorgeous wooded glens that recall his early film, NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND. The film also features battle sequences that are reminiscent of the stunning live action warfare in Akira Kurosawa's RAN. The startlingly fluid movements of these mythological characters are detailed far beyond any other hand-animated production, easily making this one of the most spectacular animated films ever made. Reviews for Princess Mononoke
Hayao Miyazaki recasts the mythic tale of man's dominion over the earth with an animist mythology and a conservationist message...
Obviously the real star here is the artwork, which was spearheaded by director/lead animator Hayao Miyazaki.
Hayao Miyazaki's eco-friendly animated fable about animal gods and those damn humans bent on destroying the environment is made bearable by some trademark anime limb-severing violence.
Even when animals speak, lip sync is avoided; they seem to be communicating almost telepathically, and one seldom feels that they're contradicting their animal natures.
Its imagery is never less than breathtakingly beautiful, and is occasionally truly awesome...
All Miyazaki's films are masterpieces, but Princess Mononoke may just have the edge.
Hayao Miyazaki's exceedingly imaginative, beautifully realized animated epic adventure has been adapted into English with tact and talent...
It's just right for the 9-year-old looking to while away a long afternoon in escapist storytelling.
While Miyazaki's ecological concerns are never in doubt, he neither oversentimentalises the forces of nature, nor demonises the human characters.
Superbly imagined and visually sumptuous, it's let down only by Hisaishi's sub-Miklos Rosza score.
Theres ten times as much imagination in this film than in The Phantom Menace, and theres a much more engaging and multi-faceted story to boot.
This web of mixed motives is one of Princess Mononoke's greatest strengths. Not once do we feel that the characters are cardboard cutout villains and their hardships are more powerful as a result.
Miyazaki's artistry is evident in every frame, a pristine combination of lush greenery, ghastly mythic monsters and beautifully executed humans.
An animated fable of dazzling artistry, one of the most beautiful ever made.
A wonderful film directed by Hayao Miyazaki, often called the Walt Disney of Japanimation.
