So I restarted my Netflix the other day. I recently recieved The Prisoner disc 1 and Deadwood Disc 1. I'm a sucker for british spy shows from the sixties. I love the whole style they had. I find the much more entrancing than any of the bond films. My favorite so far is Danger Man.(Known as "Secret Agent" in the US)
Released before the first Bond film, it was a brilliant series starring Patrick Mcgoohan. After a few episode I realized how brilliant he was. Mcgoohan's followup to Danger Man was The Prisoner. In it, he plays some sort of secret agent who is captured by some organization and sent to "the Village" and island where other agents and the like a forced to live while the organization tries to get information out of them. Mcgoohan's character is known only as #6 and never get's a real name. Though it seems to be the same character he portrayed in Danger Man, John Drake. So far the show seems pretty good, and I am excited to see more of it. The show has a strong sci fi edge and lots of mystery. Too bad you rarely get more than 2 episodes a disc. It will take forever for me to see them all... If you like spi shows, and shows with an on going plot, and a lot of secrets to unravel then this seems like the show for you, the question is whether it can last a full season of just #6 trying to escape, what with teh limited scope of only "the village", I will review more as I see it. The second show I watched was Deadwood. This is an amazing western tv series. Almost all of the characters were real people as are most of the events. With creativ liscenses taken here and there of course. While normal (non Spaghetti) westerns don't normally apeal to me. Deadwoo isn't really like them. But make no mistake, it is no spaghetti western either. It is far slower and deliberatley paced. Focusing more on characters and dram than gunplay. In fact, of the two episodes I have seen there has only been 2 people shot, and it happens within seconds. though there is plenty of other viollence to go around. It isn't action packed but a character drama. And the characters are great. All acted exceptionally, and fleshed out. Each is unique. The characters really makie the show. For fans of westerns or really goods tv I highly suggest it. I also got Secret Agent X-9, one of the last serials, made in 1945 and starring Lloyd Bridges of all people. I shall review it after I watch it.
