While shows like THE APPRENTICE may claim to pick winners on the basis of merit, the decisions of who is eliminated often seem random, or ratings-driven at best. In contrast, PROJECT RUNWAY focuses on the art of fashion design, which requires each contestant to possess technical skills like sewing, draping, and pattern-making, as well as a mastery of design principles and an understanding of what sells. After a cast of aspiring designers is gathered in New York City, Klum and expert judges (including Michael Kors) send them on various design missions. Using the resources of their metropolitan surroundings, and slaving away at sewing machines at Parsons School of Design, each contestant does his or her best to create outfits ranging from evening gowns to Postal Service uniforms, all in an intensely competitive atmosphere. From the charming and outrageously effeminate Austin Scarlett (whose designs, like his name, suggest vintage films and womanly grace) to the witty Jay McCarroll and the bitchy Wendy Pepper, the runway is constantly filled with clashing personalities and diverse styles. For anyone with an interest in fashion design, the show is actually quite informative. And for anyone just looking to spend an hour being entertained, the series offers enough eccentric characters and drama-filled catfights to tickle any reality-show addict's fancy. This release contains every episode from the show's popular debut season. [More]

The idea that the product of their labours will be presented for us, the schadenfreudians, to take our pokes at is brilliant.

[T]he genuinely creative aspect of this game show... gets subsumed by the bread-and-circuses aspect of seemingly sincere, interesting, ambitious people getting thrown to the lions...
