Perhaps the visuals in 3D were worth it but...

I missed this in the theaters and ended up watching it at home. So many plot holes and unanswered questions I can't see how this rated so high. Snakes, octopus and baby aliens? Exactly who/what was supposed to be the higher life form here and why were they camping out?
