Critic Review - Denver Post

Much like Rutger Hauer's turn as a replicant in Scott's Blade Runner, Fassbender's performance may launch Prometheus into the cult stratosphere.

Lisa,
You have got to be kidding! Fassbender's acting, his character and script looks like a cartoon next to Rutger Hauer's role in Blade Runner!
Ridley Scott lost some major league cred for this attempt.

William you are totally right. I don“t know what is going on with these people: do you really believe in this like a great movie??? Make yourself a favour, go home and watch Star Trek. Put some logic and common sense and then come back to see what a big nonsense Prometheus is.

Uh no, Fassbender *is* the best performance of the film, but all the plotholes and unclear character motivations (does he have emotions despite being a robot or is he acting according to Weyland's agenda? If the former, how, he's a robot? If the latter why do his actions seem to be as much in favor of Weyland's mission as against it?). Consequently, Fassbender is good, but Prometheus has no chance of achieving the same cult status, because the script is quite simply horrible. And special effects do not a cult classic make.

I thought it was made clear that Fassbender's David 8 was made by Weyland to be the son he never had, he is different to the other models. I thought it was also made clear that he was following Weyland's agenda, and not Vickers'.

These plot holes people keep talking about, I don't see them personally. :\ maybe I missed something, or didn't.

For the most part yes, I agree that he was clearly following the agenda of the elder Weyland, but certain flashes of emotion made it clear that David took certain actions to fulfill that agenda out of anger or disdain as opposed to necessity. Assuming David's objective was to find the living engineers and get Weyland an audience with them, the move against Holloway and the endangering of all life on the ship by not dealing with Ward's "condition" after that, run contrary to him acting solely according to orders and not also emotion.

Yeah, his "robot" is horrible! Either he has emotions or he dosen't. This movie was a bare step above the crap that was Aliens 4. I'm so damn disappointed.

I've seen this movie before and it was called Alien. I kept thinking something original was going to happen, that they wouldn't be following the same story line (albeit with some thinly veiled attempts at a sub plot - posing question they never answer), but alas it was simply Alien re-hashed with really cool special effects.

A small crew sets out for deep space financed by a corporation that has secret motives. The crew discovers an alien species that inhabits the bodies of its host, everyone is killed except a woman who is the sole survivor. That is the basic story line of Alien, and also the story line of Prometheus, right down to the android on board who secretly conspires with the corporation.

I really wanted to like this film, but so disappointed by the complete lack of originality. Apparently originality is not required to please the masses these days, all you need is really cool special effects.

Before Prometheus there is a preview for Total Recall. I would like to see more originality from Hollywood, that would capture my attention and that is what propels films into "cult" status. Prometheus is Alien with better special effects and nothing more. I for one demand more from film makers.

OK - so Aliens is a rehash of Alien too, eh?

A small crew (of marines) sets out for deep space financed by a corporation that has secret motives. The crew (of marines) discovers an alien species that inhabits the bodies of its host, everyone is killed except a woman who is the sole survivor (after everyone else is killed in A3). That is the basic story line of Alien, and also the story line of Aliens, right down to the android on board who secretly [doesn't] conspire with the corporation.

It isn't Alien. It isn't Alien 2. If you went looking for the Alien franchise that Cameron created that focused on the xenomorphs then yes you'll be disappointed. Personally, I got a whole lot less xenomorph and a whole lot more alien: the world was alien, the creatures were all alien, that was the point and the most striking similarity with the original Alien. Cameron turned it into the monster franchise that finally terminated (I hope) in the AvP series.

I saw it in the IMAX 3D and it was visually stunning, engaging and entertaining. The 3D was well done and contributed to the overall immersion rather than detracting from it like so many others with their 3D gimmickry. My friend and I left satisfied and with questions and observations about where they tied up plotlines from Alien and where it could go from here. Too bad we didn't see the same movie...

What? There weren't any wiggly bits of alien intestines shaking in your face? People weren't getting run through with sharp sticks that stopped an inch from your nose? Boulders and rocks weren't flying out of the screen at you to get you to duck and cover?

The 3D was used to enhance the depth and realism of the film without stooping to the usual 3D tropes employed to "wow!" the audience and distract them from how stupid the movie might be (Journey 2 anyone?).

"Fassbender's performance may launch Prometheus into the cult stratosphere."
You mean like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" cult fame? They did have good acting talent in Prometheus and Fassbender as the android is one of the few bright spots in this movie (not that bright).

Save yourself $10 + gas + popcorn and rent "Mission to Mars". It's very similar in many ways including being not so hot of a movie. The people are stupid, they do stupid things, they die stupidly and the dialog is bad.

To be fair Prometheus is not as terrible as "Mission to Mars" but neither is it near as good as "Alien" or "Aliens".

"...Fassbender's performance may launch Prometheus into the cult stratosphere."

A film budgeted upwards of $150 million that has already collected $300 million internationally at the box office is now considered "cult"? Move over Bubba Ho-Tep, Pi and Barbarella then...
