Critics Consensus: Prometheus is Certified Fresh

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got an alien resurrection (Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender) and an incredible journey ( Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, with voice work from Ben Stiller and Jada Pinkett Smith). What do the critics have to say? More than three decades after Alien helped to usher in a new era in sci-fi cinema, Ridley Scott heads back to the cosmos for the ambitious Prometheus. And critics saythat while this kinda-sorta prequel to Alien lacks the focus and brutal efficiency of Scott's 1979 classic, it's well acted, visually stunning, and filled with big ideas. Hey, who needs phone numbers when you got friends. Something about a "pathological liar".

This is the first weekend this summer season in which too blockbuster hits go at each other head to head, and also the first time in a while in which both have very similar RT meters. My guess is that Madagascar 3 wins the weekend because it is the first major movie for kids this summer and its a sequel, while Prometheus (which I guess takes place in the Alien's universe) is a a kinda-prequel which will get a lot of adult sci-fi fans excited but not much else. The reviews are decent but not amazing which kinda makes me think it won't break too hard into the mainstream although it will still do well. Expectations on the review side are much higher for Prometheus than Madagascar 3 which families would have taken to see even if it got bad reviews. Interesting that the franchise is getting better with each installment from mediocre to good.

The family movie will obviously win. I'm not even worried about that.

It is also the first animated film this year that I actually won't mind seeing with the kids! :)

Nice. Two Certified Fresh films this weekend. It'll be a while until I see Prometheus and I'm not in a rush to see Madagascar 3. If I go to the movies this weekend, I'll be checking out Snow White and the Huntsman.

I saw the trailer for Tarantino's Django Unchained yesterday and it looks like a blend of the Blaxploitation and Western genres. The movie looks great and Leonardo DiCaprio's makeup cracked me up especially when they zoomed in on his face at 1:20.
