Combining unabashed gore with political commentary and social satire reminiscent of George Romero, South African director Kenneth Kaplan's debut is an award-winning horror film that deconstructs the absurdity of apartheid through dark humor. Fanus (Carl Beukes) is a white rookie cop working a beat in a surreal industrial town. His older half-brother (Danny Keogh) has just returned home after a long absence, taking up a relationship with his mother Gertrude (Aletta Bezuidenhout) that is as dark as it is incestuous; the two begin plotting a way to resurrect Fanus' deceased father, who was an evil general in the apartheid regime. Little does the hapless rookie cop know, however, that his is the last South African blood of a purely Aryan descent, and thus it is required to carry out his relatives' nefarious deed. Thus ensues a vampiric bloodbath of epic proportions, as the corruption, brutality, and perversion of events serve as an expose of Apartheid politics. [More]
