Quilombo de Palmares was a real-life democratic society, created in Brazil in the 17th century. This incredibly elaborate (and surprisingly little-known) film traces the origins of Quilombo, which began as a community of freed slaves. The colony becomes a safe harbor for other outcasts of the world, including Indians and Jews. A romanticized story of Quilombo de Palmares, the most famous settlement of escaped slaves in Brazil. Nothing great of this movie. It was a good story.

Good Movie be sure and read Ebert's review. Very interesting to see the point of view of the free slaves in Brazil in 1600 and 1700 fighting for their continued freedom. I would have like the movie more if they had not interspersed the film with modern Brazilian popular music. It just did not fit in. I enjoyed the
