Synopsis: In 17th century colonial Brazil, the health of the economic system depended upon the work of slaves. But the slaves had no intention of taking their captivity quietly: they fought their "owners" and fled to the hills, where they established quilombos or free slave states. Taking advantage of recent historical research, director Carlos Diegues -- who first explored the subject in his 1964 film "Ganga Zumba" -- looks at Palmares, one of the largest and most long-lived of the quilombos. It's an epic tale of an attempted utopian society, and the inability of that utopia to survive in the face of racism, colonialism, and militarism.
