Five Favorite Films with Carla Gugino
The Race to Witch Mountain and Watchmen star pulls double duty this week, and talks about her upcoming passion project, Women in Trouble.

Carla Gugino

A certain quest for variety has allowed Carla Gugino to cultivate a fan base within two distinctly divergent demographics, alternating between femme fatale and strong maternal figures in films like Sin City and the Spy Kids trilogy, respectively. The juxtaposition has never been more apparent than it is during this month, in which she appears in back-to-back weeks as the pin-up superheroine Silk Spectre in Zack Snyder's Watchmen and then as Dr. Alex Friedman, a brainy UFO specialist who teams up with a cab driver (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) to help a pair of alien teens in this week's Race to Witch Mountain.

Rotten Tomatoes spoke with Carla Gugino about her favorite films of the moment (every true film geek has a hard time picking just five) and discussed her drive to diversify her career. While Race to Witch Mountain marks her third film of the year so far (following The Unborn and Watchmen) and her eighth in two years (including American Gangster, The Lookout, and Righteous Kill), Gugino also shared her enthusiasm for a trio of upcoming passion projects: Women in Trouble and Elektra Luxx, the first two films in a trilogy which she's producing and starring in for director Sebastian Gutierrez.

Below, read on as Carla Gugino shares her Five Favorite Films (or go straight to our extended interview).

All That Jazz

"Straight up Bob Fosse goodness. Roy Scheider is amazing in this movie. (It's my favorite performance of his though I have many a good friend who would argue it's in Jaws, but check it out and I think you'll agree with me.)"

With all due respect to Carla Gugino's career, she's so smokin' hot it's not even funny. I'm at a loss for more educated words so I will let others say similiar things as well. The best part of "Night At The Museum" was all of the scenes she was in.

Agreed with everything you said, Gugino is really really good looking and a really good actress. Good list, not generic choices... Can't say I am looking forward to Race to Which Mountain at all, but she was pretty good in Watchmen. She was pretty awesome in Sin City, Entourage, and I remember even liking her in the Spy Kids movies. She was even good in Night at The Museum, and I think its hard to make yourself likable when your in a movie like that.
Also I presume I am not the only one looking forward to seeing her play a porno actress in Elecktra Luxx?

Your presumption is correct. Hopefully it will have a release here in the Dallas-area.

I love this woman!! She is a really great actress and has a natural beauty and sexiness that you don't really see all the time in other actresses. She is very subtle when it comes to this stuff and it isn't in your face.

I haven't seen a movie in which she didn't do a great job. The movies themselves however, she has been in a few not-so-good ones.

This is a really real list, they're good films but not safe answers. I'm a big fan of Carla Guigino, I think she's a cool lady

Too bad all the films are not the best work of their respective directors though:
Fosse: Cabaret or Lenny
Almodovar: Volver, Talk to Her, and All About My mother.
Scorcese: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Last Waltz etc.
Gilliam: Brazil, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Donen: Singin' in the Rain

I often thing people confuse "favorite" film lists with "best" film lists. You can absolutely love a movie without thinking it is a crowning cinematic achievement. Being able to watch a film endless times, and calling it your favorite, does not mean that you think it is the best work a director, actor, etc. has put out.

On that note, I think Carla's list is fantastic, and shows her character as a movie watcher... without making her look like a pretentious twat by picking revered classics. Love this woman.

Interesting list, very unique and obviously personal, none of the standard didn't-even-think-about-it answers. Nice seeing 12 Monkeys there, it's one of my favourites too.

She's 'sorta' hot, but nothing special. I guess I'm hard to please. Or an idiot. Nice list all in all.

I love the choice of 12 Monkeys. What she said about Brad Pitt was right on the mark. It still stands up as one of his best performances. I agree with Beeniebag12, Átame is not one of the best works of Almodóvar, "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios," is still his best by far. And thank you Bowiesummer for that definition, which is why Goonies is still one of my favorite movies, despite its many flaws.

First, Goonies has NO FLAWS!

Second, great list, great actress, great lady.
Keep up the good work Ms. Gugino!

Anyone remember her in one of Bon Jovi's videos? (Bed of Roses I think) She was über hot in that!

I just spent a few minutes on youtube, an she's in the Bon Jovi music video "Always." And I can confirm: yes, she looks totally hot in it.

I'm glad for this Top 5 list. I now have inside information on Carla for when I hit on her.
