The question before us is: When exactly did Jonathan Demme lose his sense of humor?
Anne Hathaway is brilliant. Everything else in this tiresome, staggeringly self-conscious and self-satisfied movie is almost unwatchable. If authenticity and true feeling are over here, on this end of the continuum, then this piece of nothing is way over there, with, I agree with Richard Schicke, most of Altman. It's a trap, a movie like this, for cheap emotion and inch-deep insight.
