When he catches demure Rhoda conning fellow card players in poker game, Mal decides to help the girl out in return for her affections. She cares for an alcoholic violinist and could benefit from Mal's money. Mal supports both of them and, later, proposes marriage to Rhoda, who accepts. He plans to showcase the violinist in a local performance and wed Rhoda the following day. But Rhoda really loves her musically gifted friend.
