Movie Info

In this taut, convoluted drama, the son of a small-town couple is kidnapped and ransomed for $500,000. At first the father is willing to pay, but he changes his mind and instead broadcasts a televised offer of a reward for the kidnappers' capture if any harm befalls his son.more

Audience Reviews for Ransom!

Solid drama with a good opportunity for Glenn to show his stuff in a controlled performance. Donna is strong in the beginning but then almost disappears from the film.

I have never seen the Mel Gibson version, but I know the story and heard about the twist ending and how ridicules it is. I love the idea of a man who says screw the kidnappers and offer a reward for their heads. This film differs from the remake by the story being about why the father makes the decision and how society treats him for making it. Glenn Ford is great as the angry and in control father who calls the shots while his wife is drugged up. Two stand out performances are Leslie Nielson(his first film performance) as a hard nosed newspaper man who seems to be the only one on Ford's side and the butler Juano Hemandez. It has some great scenes but all is forgiven a little too easily at the end. If you like the remake then I recommend seeing this version to compare and just too see how twist are unnecessary.

Reasonably suspenseful, it?s a bit overacted, particularly by Donna Reed. She is way way over the top. The supporting cast is good, especially Juano Hernandez. It's not a bad movie, it's just a bit extreme and too melodramatic for my taste.
