I agree with a corny father-son moment, a weak story, and all wrapped up in robots senselessly fighting each other, this movie is just for thoes who only care for pointless fighting.
Wow, that was a condescending summary! "Surely a story as elementary and essentially derivative as this one" makes you sound like you are talking in some effete brittish accent (my apologies if you actually are an effete snob with a brittish accents, in which case all is forgiven). Your review was better than the summary. I agree that it was a derivative story, but execution is a big deal when it comes to being entertained. And I was surprised that the acting and pacing of this movie was pretty good. I wasn't bothered that it was long. Self indulgent? yes. Terrible? No. The main character was intentionally a fool, leaving him tons of room for personal redemption. By your own admission his film had some good things going for it, and I think you gave it a C+ because you were a little embarrassed to sort of enjoy it. So what I am saying here is that I suspect it was probably more like a B or even a B+, but that people who can, with a straight face, start sentences with "Surely a story as elementary and essentially derivative as this one..." have certain appearances to keep up. I mean Man on Fire was a totally derivative and formulaic movie, actually remake of derivative to boot, and ridiculously long. And you liked it. Just saying.
