Average Rating:7.7/10

Consensus: Perfectly compositing humor and horror, the only thing more effective than Re-Animator's gory scares are its dry, deadpan jokes.

Runtime: 86 mins

Genre: Horror/Suspense

Synopsis: Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) has found the secret to eternal life--or so he thinks. West needs fresh cadavers to continue his experiments in the re-animation of dead tissue, so he enlists the help... Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) has found the secret to eternal life--or so he thinks. West needs fresh cadavers to continue his experiments in the re-animation of dead tissue, so he enlists the help of young medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) to steal bodies from the local morgue. Despite all the warning signs of failure, the eccentric West's research continues. The results are crazed zombies that roam the streets, severed heads that talk, murder, madness, and chaos, all in the name of science, of course. Director Stuart Gordon's film debut, an adaptation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, is a masterpiece of ghoulish fun. Graphic special effects, good scripting, and perfectly over-the-top performances make RE-ANIMATOR a classic horror film in the tradition of THE EVIL DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. [More]

A clever, madcap mid-80s cult classic combining sinister comedy with bloody horror.

Brilliant horror-comedy. Still Gordon's best.

All of this, ingenious as it may be and much as it will redound to Mr. Gordon's credit in hard-core horror circles, is absolutely to be avoided by anyone not in the mood for a major bloodbath.

Junk food at its best. There is no other reason to watch it than to revel in its excesses, and the more excessive it gets, the more fun it is.

A giddy, gory horror-comedy filled with audaciously grotesque special effects and witty black humor.

What really makes Re-Animator work is that it never takes itself very seriously.

A deliciously gross horror movie for horror movie fans, director Stuart Gordon's tour de force adapts a series of H.P. Lovecraft stories into a creepy, disquieting comedy.

We have been assaulted by a lurid imagination, amazed by unspeakable sights, blind-sided by the movie's curiously dry sense of humor. I guess that's our money's worth.
