I think the most important point you made is that "this isn't an actual anxiety that we're grappling with right now". Much like McWheeny I was an early teen when the original Red Dawn came out and a Russian "Red" invasion was a real fear. Looking back it was kind of a joke, but until the Berlin Wall came down many Americans were fearful of Russian aggression and nuclear war. I think that more Americans are worried about a zombie apocalypse than they are a Communist invasion. The Cold War is dead to this generation and the idea just doesn't work anymore.
