The film's only purpose seems to be to come up with as many ludicrous plot twists as possible and see if anyone in the audience can guess how it will work itself out.

When his cellmate, Nick, is suddenly killed, Rudy decides to take on his identity in order to meet Nick's beautiful pen-pal girlfriend, Ashley (Charlize Theron). The couple has fun until her psychotic brother, Gabriel (Gary Sinise), shows up. Gabriel and his gang want to hold up a casino where Nick had once worked, and they blackmail Rudy/Nick into going along with the scheme. Rudy has to bluff his way through the crime, pretending to be Nick in order to avoid being killed while trying to sabotage the plans of the bad guys. Will Rudy be able to outsmart the bad guys, or will he end up facedown in the snow? Double crosses abound in this frosty film noir action movie boasting a twisty script by writer Ehren Kruger (SCREAM 3, ARLINGTON ROAD) and assured direction by veteran John Frankenheimer (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, RONIN), plus a sneaky sense of humor and plenty of Christmas references. Reviews for Reindeer Games
Reindeer Games is basically a test of your ability to accept a slushpile of implausible twisteroos and Tarantino-style conceits.
A blatantly gimmicky action-thriller with the sole purpose of consistently fooling the audience.
Narratively, the movie is similar to a casino game: you're not sure where you are and the house has the advantage.
A ludicrously convoluted, laughably hard-boiled heist movie that inspires incredulity rather than affection.
It just vanishes from between your ears like cotton-candy in a tropical rainstorm, leaving nothing but a slightly sickly aftertaste.
You can almost feel yourself being drawn in, tricked and tossed out of every plot device. It's flawed, but gosh it's fun.
Ben Affleck does not work as a noir tough guy but comes across more like a recent member of the University of Michigan's Alpha Sigma Rho chapter.
A contrived plot that expects you to believe in something far more outrageous than a plump elf who delivers gifts.
the denouement involves more double-crosses, false identities and dirty secrets than you'd find in an entire library of Raymond Chandler novels, and you can bet no one is going to mistake this mess for 'The Big Sleep' or 'Farewell, My Lovely.'
