When his cellmate, Nick, is suddenly killed, Rudy decides to take on his identity in order to meet Nick's beautiful pen-pal girlfriend, Ashley (Charlize Theron). The couple has fun until her psychotic brother, Gabriel (Gary Sinise), shows up. Gabriel and his gang want to hold up a casino where Nick had once worked, and they blackmail Rudy/Nick into going along with the scheme. Rudy has to bluff his way through the crime, pretending to be Nick in order to avoid being killed while trying to sabotage the plans of the bad guys. Will Rudy be able to outsmart the bad guys, or will he end up facedown in the snow? Double crosses abound in this frosty film noir action movie boasting a twisty script by writer Ehren Kruger (SCREAM 3, ARLINGTON ROAD) and assured direction by veteran John Frankenheimer (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, RONIN), plus a sneaky sense of humor and plenty of Christmas references. Reviews for Reindeer Games
The film is also so preposterous and has such a mean-spirited, malicious current running through it, that it's hard to swallow.
Continuously push the film's credibility factor to the point that those not enjoying the stupid fun will get 'eye-aches' from too much rolling occurring in that ocular region of their bodies.
Dramatically killed with an ending so ridiculous that it practically washes away the entire entertainment value of its previous ninety minutes.
The movie is often amusing, thanks to Affleck's excellent deadpan delivery of flippant lines in the face of loaded guns and to Sinise's scenery-chewing villain.
This is one of those movies where the twists are more important than the story.
Affleck plays up the jokiness of the script, and while that famously light approach has worked elsewhere, it isn't quite what's needed in this type of action thriller.
It's a heist without a plan, a crime without a brain, a thriller without a decent script.
Frankenheimer ... treats this trashy, disreputable material with a brute squareness so leaden and dour it's practically Teutonic.
