Remember Me, My Love is well acted all around, but Muccino is proving to be an especially wonderful director of women.

On the surface, the Ristuccia family appears to have it all: Carlo (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) has a well-paying, secure job; Giulia (Laura Morante) is getting more beautiful with age; 18-year-old Valentina (Nicoletta Romanoff) has dreams of dancing stardom; and 19-year-old Paolo (Silvio Muccino) has fallen in love. But, as is the case with most things in life, desperation and hopelessness lie just around the corner. When Carlo bumps into a former flame (Monica Bellucci), the floodgates of passion are opened. Meanwhile, the other characters must confront demons of their own. After a near-fatal tragedy, the family is finally forced to confront its downward spiral. Muccino's bittersweet drama critically yet empathetically captures the lives of these tender souls. He uses sweeping Steadicam cinematography to reflect the swirling emotions within each character, and layers the picture with stacks of pop music. But Muccino's greatest talent lies in casting. As the conflicted Carlo, Bentivoglio shines, while Romanoff and Muccino (the director's brother) are completely natural in their roles. But the film's real standouts are Morante and Bellucci, two of the world's most beautiful actresses, who somehow manage to present themselves with a heartbreakingly believable fragility. [More]

Reviews for Remember Me, My Love
Cinematographer Marcello Montarsi's crisp images make all the sturm und drang a pleasure to observe.
A poignant look at Italian contemporary life where traditional values continue to crumble.
Remember Me, My Love might sound like a love story, but it makes romance look pretty bleak.
I liked it; you may not. It may come down to your level of fascination with people who scream and gesture wildly in melodramatic Italian.
There just doesn't seem the need for this much needy self-absorption.
A lively if overlong movie that allows for the full spectrum of human emotion and behavior.
How often does a director make pretty much the same film twice in a row and pretty much nail it both times?
This superficial storyline borders on being a public menace, but Muccino casts well (Monica Belluci is the other woman) and his scenes crackle with melodramatic zest.
Stylish art-house entertainment, but beware the reflection you may see in this comically dysfunctional family portrait.
Achieves the dubious distinction of featuring a large gallery of nearly all unlikable characters.
If it were less prone to soap-opera histrionics, this screechy saga of an upscale family collapsing under the weight of its members' self-absorption might have something worth saying.
Gabriele Muccino essentially subjects the audience to what Giulia subjects her family to in the film: a lot of unnecessary drama.
The movie is being sold as a romance with the tag line: 'Some loves are never forgotten.' But the only love evident here is self-love, and the overall feel is disturbingly soulless.
It's a narcissist's picnic; all of the characters are so unapologetically selfish in their passion to maximize their human potential that it's difficult to care about any of them, one way or another.
