While on the surface, high school football may seem like an innocent game played by the young, for the young, it is, in fact, much, much more. For millions, including many fans who are well removed from their high school years but who love to sit in those creaky bleachers every Friday night/Saturday morning, it is something akin to a religion. Director Boaz Yakin's REMEMBER THE TITANS captures the heart of high school football while tackling the sins of its fathers, chronicling the true story of the undefeated 1971 T.C. Williams team of Alexandria, Virginia, which was the first integrated high school team in the state. Denzel Washington brings his ever-powerful presence to the role of coach Herman Boone, who is brought in to oversee the transition to integration. Though Boone is eventually successful as a coach, the townspeople dissaprove of him because he replaces the popular, entrenched former coach, Bill Yoast (Will Patton). At first, coach Yoast resents being supplanted, while coach Boone is told that his promotion was just for show--to help the integration--and that he's likely to be lifted if the team loses a game. Will the coaches and players be able to overcome their adversity and make T.C. Williams a beacon for integration in sports? Those viewers who follow history already know the answer. But REMEMBER THE TITANS portrays the story and delivers the inspirational result with a passion and glory that will warm the hearts of all those dedicated high school football fans who continue to bring pride to the sport. Reviews for Remember the Titans
The film tries its best not to point fingers and avoids the strawmen racists that are so easily shown in other movies.
A wonderful crowd pleaser, and as long as you don’t expect too much of it or think about it too deeply, it will remain a favourite.

... a highly manipulative, utterly predictable and greatly entertaining film
Once kicked, the ball deflates midway through the goal posts, and then lies there sagging for another 45 minutes.
It's got Denzel Washington in it (generally a good sign), it's not just about gridiron, it's not as predictable as you might think, and it's actually rather good.
Washington and the others score in this predictable but rousing film where the big victory is over attitudes.
One only wishes that the fervor depicted within the 100 yard markers could have successfully carried over to the racial issues being explored off the field.
Although there's enough emotional manipulation here to fill a river with tears, it's hard not to be swept up...
The leads, Denzel Washington and particularly Will Patton, are so good they occasionally make you forget the material is shameless.
I admired the way the screenplay, by Gregory Allen Howard, doesn't make Boone noble and Yoast a racist, but shows them both as ambitious and skilled professionals.
A sprawling, muscular gridiron movie that, surprisingly enough, doesn’t have all that much to do with football.
The acting and casting is top pick, highlighted by Denzel Washington's fierce opinionating and single-mindedness. Will Patton is totally impressive in the way he remains sympathetic and complex.
...masked by the surface of a sports movie, but one where even the most obvious clichés (even the obligatory 'big game' climax) come off without much criticism.
