Showing the price and behind-the-scenes drama of post 9/11 anti-terrorist security policies, the film focuses on the controversial U.S. practice of transporting suspected terrorists to locations outside the U.S. for intense interrogation and, as the film suggests, torture. Here, it is Egyptian-born Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally), an engineer and family man, who becomes a CIA target. On his way home to Chicago from business in South Africa, Anwar disappears at the Washington, D.C., airport. The records show he boarded the plane, but he never returns to his pregnant wife, Isabella (Witherspoon), and small son. As Anwar is taken to an undisclosed location for questioning, several other plotlines are introduced. After his partner is killed by a suicide bomber, Douglas Freeman (Gyllenhaal), a young and relatively inexperienced CIA analyst, must step in to observe the brutal torture and interrogation of Anwar at the hands of the brutish Abasi Fawal (Igal Naor), whose own daughter has run away with the brother of a potential terrorist. RENDITION tackles serious issues with an all-star cast that also includes a typically flawless Meryl Streep as a steely government official responsible for approving Anwar's kidnapping, and Peter Sarsgaard as old friend of Isabella who uses his political position to help her. RENDITION never delves too deeply into any one character, focusing instead on the important ways in which multiple storylines intersect and the personal stakes that each character has in the case. Clever editing and solid writing contribute to the film's success by encouraging the audience to view events from multiple points of view and by never becoming preachy or one-sided. [More]

The thought that my life might be turned upside down merely by someone calling me is very frightening indeed.

Rendition is an important film. Art, by definition, is supposed to provoke, to spur emotions, to enlighten. On those counts, this movie scores a bull's-eye.

The stories are unflatteringly forced together, neither of them highlighting the thematic relevance of the other.

Rendition proves its own case by not finding an audience for its message -- and that is perhaps more disturbing than its scenes of torture.

The film's message is still relevant, but it's already universally recognized how far the executive branch will go to get its latest war on.

...housing top-notch actors and their hefty paychecks but nothing else beyond the obviousness of the melodramatic malarkey it spouts with empty conviction.

I don’t fault Rendition for its liberal politics. I fault it for hammering home those politics in such pounding, slanted fashion.

It's easy to get outraged over an innocent man being tortured, but shouldn't we be outraged by the very idea of torture?

The movie's insistent message about the morality and effectiveness of torture packs an unexpected and politically timely punch.

I have no qualms with any of the performances, or with the film's individual components. It's the overall effect that's lackluster. This is a film that's good and decent, but not as deep it wants to be.

Although South African director Gavin Hood gave us the searing, Oscar-winning foreign film Tsotsi, he may not yet have enough experience to handle something on a grander scale.

If these new, allegedly topical movies are to make us feel anything -- to move us toward any action or even just toward any fresh realization -- they need to at least seem alive on the screen, instead of just courting our polite, measured applause.

While Rendition does show terrible torture, it doesn't quite rethink the cultural context, the conditions that produce such monsters, again and again.

Rendition's approach feels additionally preachy and one-noted because its message is bigger than both the story and the human element.
