Resident Evil Enters CGI Realm

Sony, Capcom producing 3-D 'toon.

Good news, fans of the Resident Evil films: Sony and Capcom are teaming up to continue the series. Sort of.

Variety reports that the companies are jointly producing Biohazard: Generation, a 3-D CGI feature that will extend the RE mythology. From the article:

Skedded for release in the latter half of 2008, the toon, like the other "Resident Evil" pics, is based on a hit horror game that Shinji Mikami created and Capcom developed for the Sony PlayStation.

The toon will be 3-D CG and based on an original story; the helmer and other cast and crew are yet to be announced.

If this has any impact on the live-action franchise, it hasn't been revealed. Since its release in September, the third (and supposedly final) RE film, Resident Evil: Extinction, has amassed a $100 million worldwide gross.

Resident Evil franchise has been a joke. Even though CGI doesn't make a movie better, I think its use will bring out different vibe that more closely resembles RE tradition. I don't know how successful the outcome will be, but I almost guarantee that this will be better than the originals.

Why not just put this attention toward finishing off the damn RE:5 game. If you really feel inclined to do the story over again in nice new CGI then how about remaking RE for the PS3 and X360, That would be fun.

Resident Evil could have been great. It isn't that hard to make at least a decent zombie movie. They should have followed the games. And I don't mean it literally (House of the Dead). Scrap Alice and do this right.

RE died with the last one. the first two were decent, entertaining at least but the 3rd was just stupid. i spent more time wondering which movie they were going to rip off next. switching to cgi and basically remaking the series is surprisingly...a smart move.

meh, the the third was enjoyable only because i didn't go looking for the cure for cancer. trying to find some sort of meaning in it is pointless. A cg movie is pointless because i dont see the proper amount of funds being spent to do it justice.

It's probably going to blow Wookie balls, just like the Final Fantasy film did. At this point, they may as well just release all the Playstation games of R.E. in the theaters and just get it over with.

In reply to your statement, I really don't think the studio cares that the first 3 failed to gain critical acclaim. All they care about is that all 3 were moderately successful at the box office raking in a pretty decent profit.

I agree with XENOGEARS they mine as well finish it up because everybody knows just as well as i do that they will do it anyway we will just to have to wait longer.I guess in the mean time lets see what CGI can bring us.I haven't seen the third one yet I'm just gonna wait until it hit DVD maybe this film will catch my intrest enough to go see it at the theature.

They should've done this earlier, like after the first movie. Now there's no way anyone will give them the backing to make it worth anything. I'd definitely go see it if the CG stuff was on par with the Final Fantasy movie or Beowulf ( which looks super-hard by the way )... but... it won't be.

terrible..... terrible..... absolutely terrible idea to an already stupid series..... CGI sucks so much, i don't want all my movies to look like video games, but that's pretty much all that's in the movies these days.

No no no...let the hating cease. There was a Romero script written for the original that followed RE1 (the game) that was great. Alice needs to go. Characters like Chris, Jill, Wesker and even Leon (RE4 version) would be great to follow.

I truly hope in the sequel to Extinction, we see an Empire-esque dark ending where Alice and her sorry clones are killed by Wesker (also infected) and Umbrella resuming under the guise of the company being the company (who has the resources) to save the world and deflect blame.

Get rid of alice and give Romero a go ahead. He already has the experience in/on several different projects, to at the least make it better than those pathetic paul ****ty anderson movies. Twilight Zone, Tales From the Darkside, LOTD, Dawn Of the Dead, Romero could have easily made an intelligent and articulate adaptation of the video games. All thats left now is a cinematic joke.
