Critic Review - Newsday

The script is incoherent and the acting is terrible -- avatars would have been an improvement.

I'd like to bring this up, just for the record... these movies give video games a bad name. A worse name than they've already had to live with for decades, that is.
Fact of the matter is, most video games worth their salt nowadays really are works of art, often serving as competent storytelling engines in their own right. They've come a long way from "brainless button mashing" and pointless violence. Don't get me wrong, that still happens, but it's gotten to the point where this art form deserves better than to be generalized as such.
Actually, the Resident Evil films don't even have much to do with the games. There's no Alice, there's no post-apocalyptic wasteland... the whole affair has basically devolved into a vanity project for W.S. Anderson and his wife. The game series is known for things like its haunting settings, its storyline, puzzle solving, and an atmosphere of creeping, Lovecraftian horror. Not mindless action.
So please... don't call this movie a video game. Video games deserve better.

Although I do agree on most of what you said, I will say the first 3 were actually pretty good as a whole story. Meaning the plot was chronological for the movie, but it was also made to be plausible "if" it would happen. But the last 2 were god awful!!
I mean, they introduce (finally) Chris Redfield, but he AND Claire left out of the story... wtf??
I will agree with the fact that Anderson just likes to see his wife kick ass...

I totally disagree with your review on this movie. Yes, the acting is a little cruddy and the story could use work, but that's what you have to expect when seeing a movie like this. It was originally based on a video game, so what are you gonna expect? I went into the movie knowing that it wont grab my attention through the story and characters, but through the amazing visuals it presents via 3D, slow-motion, and epic scenes. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who can except the story for what it is and let yourself enjoy it for its stunning fight and chase sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat, along with the epic movie score. Great movie, seeing it for the third time this weekend!
