Golino's performance is effortlessly haunting; it's a shame she doesn't have more of a movie to hang it on.

Though the story is warmly humanistic it is too paper thin to mean much.

It's sweet, but slight -- the sort of fish that, had Grazia's neighbors caught, they would have immediately, if reluctantly, thrown back.

Its plot gets too slow even for open-ended movies such as this.

A beautifully scenic but languid character study that could use a shot of adrenalin and a more straightforward story line.

It's an incredibly beautiful island that makes you want to lie on the beach and soak up the sun, but the customs could drive anyone to rebel.

Crialese's stated purpose is to create a sense of magical realism, and even as he draws on an actual fable to do so, there's an incomplete feeling to the production.

Beautiful, but listless. After a while, it feels less like a film and more like a ninety minute commercial for the Mediterranean Department of Tourism.

Respiro, contrary to its title, doesn't really breathe much, but it has its moments.

Respiro has a sexy cast and is gorgeous to watch -- but it takes more than that to make a movie worth seeking out.

While Crialese ... certainly has a knack for visualizing such moments, his script willfully refuses to pull them together to tell a coherent story.

After 90 minutes of policing female sexuality, the film is left with little to say on the matter.

A mood piece that never quite manages to rise above being just a mood piece.

Magnificent sun-drenched locations and a lolling atmosphere of sensuality don't make up for an awfully thin story.

Respiro is not completely satisfying, because its purpose is cloudy.
