Audience Reviews for Riot (G.B.H.)
A low-budget drama that takes a good 15 minutes to get into it's stride (the scenes seem to edited a bit randomly the story doesn't seem to be going anywhere) but once the main characters are established and start developing relationships together then the whole thing builds to a brutal but inevitable climax. By using the recent London riots as a backdrop Phillips has found a good way to highlight the anger and frustration that is still obviously evident in Britain's main city, especially in certain areas and since I am a Londoner and vividly remember the riots the film hit home hard for me. Nevern has a difficult role as Damian and to begin with I thought he was underplaying the role but he is actually doing a good job trying to control the rage that's in him. Shirley is also very good as the new recruit and a potential savour for Damian. However it is O'Neill as Shirley's dad that really delivers a great performance and his scenes, especially after his home has been invaded, are beautifully acted. After watching this film I found that it left me feeling slightly disturbed but happy that the British film industry can still produce quality material.
