Consensus: In his second Hollywood movie, Jet Li impresses. Unfortunately, when he's not on screen, the movie slows to a crawl. Though there's some spark between Jet and Aaliyah, there isn't any threat of a fire. And as impressive as the action sequences are, some critics feel they are over-edited.

Two warring families, one Chinese, one African American, are fighting for control of the Oakland waterfront. It's an eye for an eye as members of each gang keep turning up dead--including the son of Ch'u Sing, the Chinese gang leader, which escalates the war to epic proportions. Into this fray comes Han Sing (Jet Li), Ch'u's other son, a cop who has escaped from a Hong Kong prison where he was serving time for not arresting his father and brother. Han soon becomes a little too friendly with Trish O'Day (Aaliyah), the daughter of Isaak O'Day (Delroy Lindo), the leader of the African American gang. The growing romance between Han and Trish parallels the growing body count. ROMEO MUST DIE is a fast-paced, hip-hop retelling of the classic Shakespeare tale. A thumping soundtrack and wicked special effects--including martial arts battles in which the fighters virtually fly through the air--add to the excitement. Jet Li and Aaliyah turn in fine performances laced with just the right amount of comedy. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak has a keen visual sense--he previously served as cinematographer on such films as THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, SPECIES, and SPEED--that pumps up such standard fare as car chases, prison breaks, and even a pickup football game. The film includes an awesome special effect that reveals a person's skeleton as he dies--it has to be seen to be believed. [More]

Reviews for Romeo Must Die
A charming (yes!) action movie in which a familiar gang-war scenario gets juiced up with innovative, wittily choreographed fight scenes.
The reason to sit through [Romeo Must Die's] uninspired, formulaic moves ... is its half-dozen spectacular fight sequences.
You certainly could do worse than this very loose and limber action-thriller.
The straight-to-video plot of Romeo Must Die may border on the ridiculous, but the fight scenes are knockouts.
What impresses me about this film is its consistency in terms of characterization.
Li’s fight scenes are amazing and there honestly shouldn’t be anybody going to see this film for any other reason.
Romeo Must Die has a great look and an edgy feel, along with some broad swaths of humor.
Romeo Must Die may not have the best script in the world, but it brings Jet Li to the big screen in a way that all action junkies, not just the video-store geeks, will appreciate.
All Romeo Must Die claims and wants to be is one brisk jolt of action, and that's exactly what it is.
The best scenes mesh together the kind of super-gymnastic moves and dotty fun which would make Jackie Chan go green.
Like the work of Li's Hong Kong 'big brothers,' Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, Romeo Must Die mixes humility and humor with its bone-crushing action.
