Movie Info

New York's Roseland ballroom was in 1977 the traditional gathering place of senior citizens who wanted briefly to relive the good old days. Appropriately, the cast of Merchant/Ivory's Roseland includes a quartet of always-welcome showbiz veterans: Teresa Wright, Lou Jacobi, Helen Gallagher. The episodic storyline is unified by an unending flow of vintage hit songs, including "Slow Boat to China", "Stranger in Paradise" and "Rockin' Chair". The most effective vignette involves cleaning-lady Skala, whose minimum-wage job supports her weekly ballroom nostalgia-fests. The film was written by Merchant-Ivory perennial Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.more

Audience Reviews for Roseland

½

Senior Citizen Lonely Hearts go to the legendary Roseland Ballroom to Dance every weekend.Quite Depressing, maybe I'm not old enough to appreciate this one.

Christopher Walken as a young man: Mannequin? Waxwork? Jonathan Rhys Myers lookalike? The man would have looked ethereal if not for the horrible 70's vintage clothing he had wear in the movie.

Roseland Quotes

Russel: You think I'm vain. Cause I like myself? I like my suit. Don't you like my suit? You like my tie?
Marilyn: [giggles] Cute.
Russel: Cute? How about the rest of me? My eyes, hair, profile. Legs long enough? [gestures at stomach] Mmm, flat.

Russel: What do you do at home? Stare at the wall and go quietly crazy?
