Samuel Fuller's complex western looks at the virtues and failings of so-called civilization, and the settling of the western frontier. Rather than surrender to the North, O'Meara, a die-hard confederate soldier who loathes the United States, heads west to join a tribe of Sioux. He remains there undisturbed, with an Indian wife, until the U.S. cavalry arrives on Sioux territory, determined to possess the land and build a fort. Though the two sides try to come to an agreement, they're hindered by one renegade Indian and one rigid and prejudiced Cavalry officer.
