Through... Dan Cox goes after his subject as only an award-winning journalist can in the hotly anticipated, politically charged documentary Running with Arnold, which debuted at this year’s SXSW. Through interviews, archival footage and comic satire from the likes of Bill Maher and Rob Schneider, Cox tells the story of one of the most recognizable men of our time. In this first time portrait we learn of how a once skinny farm boy growing up in post-WorldWarII Austria went on to become mega-muscled, mega star and megalomaniac. Cox’s endless sources and nose for the news reveals what Schwarzenneger’s camp couldn’t keep covered even with the help of infamous snoop Anthony Pellicano. Arnold’s ambition and cunning can be admirable and has made him the epitome of The American Dream in his sharp business suit and baseball cap. But there is a sordid side to his glory. With The Governator in charge of the world’s fifth largest economy and a bid to amend the constitution to allow his potential campaign for the Presidency - now is the time to decide for yourself if intimidation, broken promises, lies, half truths and a “hands-on” approach to women are as acceptable as they are expected of today’s American politicians. While you’re at it, revel in the kitsch of the perma-tanned man’s muscle dazzle as he brings his circus campaign to town. Like his idol Ronald Regan, Arnold was born in the year of the pig. 2007 has been particularly promising for those lucky enough to be born in this auspicious year, even Arnold’s acceptance rating has risen. Pig magic? See for yourself and draw your own conclusions about his whirlwind takeover. [More]

The naïve clarity of the bias makes the film a bit more fun to watch, as Dan Cox takes the baseball to Arnie' image and his persona with a relish

Unfortunately, Cox's film doesn't engender trust.

This is a would-be hatchet job that's too petty to cut past the Governator's protective beefcake.

It’s a shame that [Director Dan] Cox resorts to such Rove-style foolishness.

Even if you sympathize with the movie's politics, it's impossible to embrace its hysterical approach.

Perfectly in tone with election season, Dan Cox's documentary plays like a 30-second political attack ad (at 144 times the length), rehashing the accusations that have been bouncing off the Austrian-born movie star for years.

There is simply nothing revelatory about any of it, however salacious. This is all old news and consequently not particularly interesting.

No one says filmmakers have to be objective, but there's a point where you can alienate even those who agree with you. This picture eventually goes off the rails, and it's likely to please only the most virulent of Schwarzenegger haters.
