In the real world, mental illness is a serious problem. In this film, it gives everyone a license to run around like characters in a Lewis Carroll story -- all of it set to predictable pop hits from the 1970s.
You make it sound like you think this is fiction... This was written by someone in the "real world" who dealt with those "real world" issues. And, to those who suffer from mental illness--and especially those who have pushed through it to make the best of their lives--this is an extraordinary movie because of how well it captures the perception of a survivor of such circumstances.
