Andrea (Accorsi) tries his best at countless job interviews, all of which are hilarious failures, and falls in love with a stunningly beautiful actress, Dolores (Anita Caprioli). His scruffy roommate Bart (Libero de Rienzo), a supposed literary critic who never works, keeps their hectic twentysomething lifestyle moving with boisterous jokes and outrageous storytelling. The action of the film is anchored in the apartment shared by Andrea and Bart, where their landlord is constantly threatening to evict them. The bare, open concrete floor makes a perfect handball court, and Andrea and Bart play aggressively, letting the ball ricochet off the walls and occasionally careen into lamps and furniture. When they're not teasing each other, they have conversations about literature, sex, and what on earth they should do with their lives. Friends come and go, and Andrea plans dates with Dolores. All the while, a youthful, carefree, sometimes defeatist dialogue continues, eventually leading back to a minor conversation from the beginning of the film that brings the story full circle. With SANTA MARADONA, writer-director Marco Ponti presents an honest and entertaining picture of recent graduates getting their first taste of life in the real world. This film screened in June 2002 as part of Open Roads: New Italian Cinema, a festival organized by The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City. [More]
