Anchored by a terrific performance by Abbass, Satin Rouge shows that the idea of women's self-actualization knows few continental divides.

Lilia (Hiam Abbass) is a widowed Tunisian housewife, tired of living in the shadow of others. She follows her daughter Salma (Hend El Fahem), and discovers she is having a secret liaison with a cabaret musician who works in the forbidden belly dance cabaret down the street. After watching the hypnotic shifting of hips and the euphoria of the crowds, Lilia is herself overcome with the urge to dance. From then on, nothing is the same, and nothing is out of the question, not even sharing her daughter's boyfriend. SATIN ROUGE is a remarkable first feature for writer-director Raja Amari. Her directorial eye is casual, open, and mellow, which tends to naturally dispel preconceived ideas about Arab culture in general and cinema in particular. Actor Hiam Abbass adeptly transforms her Lilia from a tight-lipped matron with her hair tied back in a severe bun to a radiant and joyous career woman. The film is left open-ended, a portent that Lilia's growth as a woman may be a rugged journey. Though not a classically happy ending, the message offered in Amari's SATIN ROUGE is ultimately uplifting and heartening. [More]

Reviews for Satin Rouge
It's rather like a Lifetime special -- pleasant, sweet and forgettable.
It takes you somewhere you're not likely to have seen before, but beneath the exotic surface (and exotic dancing) it's surprisingly old-fashioned.
The movie has lots of dancing and fabulous music. There are slow and repetitive parts, but it has just enough spice to keep it interesting.
A movie that has charm but shows weaknesses not uncommon for a novice director.
As improbable as this premise may seem, Abbass's understated, shining performance offers us the sense that on some elemental level, Lilia deeply wants to break free of her old life.
I wish the belly-dancing scenes had been more nimbly shot but found it a small revelation to see a movie in which women too plump for Hollywood-style dancing are shown lighting the fires of male fantasy.
an essentially awkward version of the lightweight female empowerment picture we've been watching for decades
Amari has dressed up this little parable in a fairly irresistible package full of privileged moments and memorable performances.
Rouge is less about a superficial midlife crisis than it is about the need to stay in touch with your own skin, at 18 or 80.
A terrifically subtle piece about one woman's personal liberation in a patriarchal Muslim society.
Belly dancing isn't always the most thrilling of dances, but it's a blast to see these women shaking and rolling because they're so thoroughly in charge of the male clientele and their own sexuality.
This bold and lyrical first feature from Raja Amari expands the pat notion that middle-aged women just wanna have fun into a rousing treatise of sensual empowerment.
While the costumes hint at changes beneath the surface, it is Abbass' performance, as she vacillates flawlessly between muted hausfrau and shining hoofer, that reveals the depths of her transformation.
