Set in a Christian high school, the teen comedy follows a group of students who are all at different places in their lives. When Mary (Jena Malone) sacrifices her virginity in an attempt to heterosexualize her gay boyfriend, she is stunned to discover that she's become pregnant. With the help of wheelchair-bound Roland (Macaulay Culkin) and the school's only Jewish student, Cassandra (Eva Amurri), Mary must try to hide her pregnancy. But when her rival, the ultra-uptight Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore), finds out, all hell breaks loose. The film culminates on prom night, when a series of revelations put things in their proper perspective. Dannelly and co-writer Michael Urban have produced a script that is a breezy, hilarious ride through the tricky waters of adolescence, and their all-star cast jumps into their roles with glee (most notably Moore and the scene-stealing Amurri). Rather than merely making jabs at the Christian right movement, however, the film preaches a universal message of tolerance and acceptance, giving audiences something deeper to chew on. The result is a surprisingly poignant film that positions Dannelly as a director to watch in the years to come. [More]

Blessed by a potent cast, Saved! lets its teens be teens -- pimples, if not warts, and all.

What's particularly troubling is that there were obvious opportunities for this dark comedy to be a little more even-handed in its treatment of the subject matter. But too often it settles for the easy, cheap joke.

Has the glitteringly satiric dialogue of Election -- and the soul of an after-school special.

Most of the humor is a gentle chiding of efforts to make Christianity hip for teens.

Once its premise is established, Saved! doesn't have anywhere to go, repetition creeps in, and jokes that might have otherwise been funny start eliciting groans instead.

Isn't as funny, or as wicked, as it should be.

There is undoubtedly a funny social satire to be set in a Christian high school, but Saved! is neither bold nor insightful enough to be it.

In a role that represents the flip side of her sweet-natured heroine in 'A Walk to Remember,' Mandy Moore is a demented delight...

The second act is a bit too ordinary, but the smart satiric first half saves this from being drab and makes it worth checking out.

Takes cheap swings at easy targets and gift wraps a tidy message of forgiveness that’s as empty as (its) put-on Christian attitude.

This faith-generic look at belief is spirited and sly but never subversive.

It's like Mean Girls with a holier-than-thou twist and a genuine (if contrived) message of acceptance.

It's a relevant, irreverent and emotionally honest film that suggests it's OK to laugh in church, at least every now and then.

For the most part, it manages to make fun of confused Christians without making fun of faith itself.
