Wan Protects "Saw IV"

James Wan directed the original "Saw," then turned the sequels over to Darren Lynn Bousman. His partner, Leigh Whannell, continued to write the scripts.

With "Saw IV" pressing ahead, even Whannell stepped back with Wan in their producorial roles, but the creator of Jigsaw promises fans the franchise is in good hands.

"It is tricky," Wan admitted. "It's the rules of diminishing sequels. It's hard to keep it fresh but it's such a big franchise, so it's pretty scary. We try to make sure that it keeps going and Lionsgate and Evolution are doing such a great job in pushing it along."

Wan also teased that new writers Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton and Thomas Fenton have taken his ball and run with it. "Some of the stuff they've come up with for the sequels are pretty crazy. I can't say too much but we'll see."

"Saw IV" will be out this Halloween.

i love reading stuff like this. writers/actors...so serious about their "craft" like they actually do a good job. somebody...anybody...make a HALFWAY decent horror flick and release it around Halloween to either make these Saw people do a BETTER MOVIE(competition breeds excellence) or take them to the straight to dvd club, where they belong.

It's not a great series and we've already talked about this on another thread, but I have to agree, Gimy. If another creator makes a better movie that sets the horror standard for the Halloween season, I'm all for it. I like the series with all its faults, but make the Saw (and all horror) guys work to make quality flicks. Gore for just shock value is getting very stale now (Saw, Hostel, etc.) and just gratuitous.

I really liked parts of the first saw (hated others) and haven't liked them much at all since except for the end of the last one to set up this next one, that seemed to have some promise but if it just turns into more gore then it will again suck.

I don't care if Stephen fuckin' Spielberg came out and said that Saw IV was the greatest masterpiece that has ever graced movie screens; they need to stop making these movies.

I used to look forward to what spooky flicks were coming out near Halloween.. now it seems nobody wants to compete with Saw.. even "Halloween" hits theaters in August. *sigh* I guess I'll have to settle for Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D

But there's a good enough amount of people that WANT them to keep coming out to keep them going.

I'm ecstatic that they're making a huge series out of this.

You're correct; it is in my opinion. I haven't seen a Saw movie, but it just seemed to me that they making new and new Saw movies. I honestly think we have a new Halloween on our hands.

Disagree with the last post-ers. The story in Saw has lost its way, and the protege was not at all interesting in Saw 3. Maybe if they spent longer than less than a year, making them, they could be better. The first film was by far the best, the second wasn't bad, but the third actually hurt the first two by creating a lame backstory.

Hopefully in the hands of new writers, this story can get back to where it was.
