Director Locked Up for Saw 5 and Saw 6
by Scott Weinberg | July 19, 2007

Summary

Back when the "Saw" producers were looking for someone to helm the third sequel, production designer David Hackl was #1 on their list -- until Darren Lynn Bousman came back. But the guy may get his chance yet. Back to Article

My money's on THIS being the one that fails to turn a tidy profit. Metaphore of a dead horse comes to mind, but only if the horse was horribly, painfully dismembered.

I know a lot of nerds come on here and just complain and talk negatively about films that haven't even been released yet, but I don't want to complain... I just want to predict; and I predict that Saw4 will have a huge opening (maybe $32mil) and then drop off after that. This Halloween will be Saw's death.

FYI: I liked 1 & 2, but 3 was SO forced.

A lot of people do come on here to complain...unfortunately when it comes to the 5th and 6th editions of horror movies like this, they're usually right.

I'm very excited to see Saw IV, I loved the first three, so I'm like Scott here, I'll hold off on judging Saw V and VI until I actually get to see them. If they're already announcing two more Saw films, then I've got a feeling that they've already got a story prepared, maybe not a screenplay, but a story though and I'm excited to see the direction that the writers take us in.

of course Saw 4 is going to be a box-office hit, but i think they need to stop with 5 and 6.

III was an improvement over II (which was not written as a Saw film, and showed it), so I'll be checking out IV. My loyalty to the series is waning, however.

Saw II= Bad.

This is where I stopped watching the saw series all together.

I came out of 300 a little disappointed. I think this was only because I went in there expecting it to be one of the greatest movies ever, and it came out just pretty good. However, Transformers was awesome.

The hardcore-horror genre has taken a well-publicized hit recently, because nobody seems to have a calendar handy.

It's summer.

They could go on prepping Saw XXVI and it will always do well so long as it's pumped out at Halloween.

I don't really care about the Saw films, they are ok at best and seem to steadily get worse as they come. But that is cool that they are handing over the rains to one of their own, who's been involved to a lesser extent with the series to this point.

Let's be straight about the Saw series. The Saw series has been excellent, well written and well directed. All three Saw films have been thoroughly enjoyable films. I loved the direction Saw 2 took, and the story of Saw 3 about the fate of Jigsaw and Amanda's relationship was a very credible, and believable one.

Again, the Saw series represents the best thriler/horror trilogy in recent decades. Compared to Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, not one of these series has maintained the integrity of the Saw films. Not one. I challenge any fan of horror to identify a better horror series.

James Wan and Darren Lynn Bousman have crafted a great Saw series. I am very excited about Saw 4 and I'm looking very forward to Rob Zombie's Halloween. After Devil's Rejects, in my opinion Zombie is the director to revive the Halloween franchise.

You do have a point, one that I don't think "Saw" fans or haters can build much of an argument against. The films are very consistent, regardless of your opinion of them.

But if you're asking for good horror trilogies, try out:
Argento's Three Mothers trilogy (admittedly, won't be complete until "La Terza Madre" comes out some time this year)
Raimi's Evil Dead Trilogy
Romero's Dead Trilogy

Some (or all) of which you may have seen.

I'd go see that in a heartbeat.
I only went to the first Saw. I didn't think it was very good, so I haven't seen the sequels. Are they any better than the first one? Just from what I've seen in trailers and the like, it seems to be more of the same.

5 and 6! How many of these can they make? I bet this is the one that disappoints at the box office. I mean Saw 3 opened stronger than Saw 2 but made less money. I think the series and the whole torture porn genre is going down....just like any other fad.

Well, if you're not into horror, I wouldn't expect someone to know much about Argento or Romero. If you do consider yourself a fan though, I think you should give some of these movies a spin in your DVD player, just so you have an opinion on 'em one way or another. I'd suggest starting with Romero's stuff, personally.

Giallo flicks (Italian horror, like Argento's work) aren't up every gorehound's alley though, just as a warning.

Also Takashi Miike. I don't know if you can call his stuff horror completely. But it has some of the most messed up violence and unwatchable torture you can find in movies. Some are works of extremely disturbed art and some are more just very violent works of genre films but all are worth checking out. These are just a sampling that I have seen.

Audition
Ichi the Killer
Gozu
Visitor Q
Imprint
Izo
Fudoh, the New Generation
Dead or Alive series

Miike's Dead or Alive series has nothing to do with that chick fighting game or the movie made about it. It's a series of violent Yakuza films.

Yes, Miike is pushing the boundaries of what horror storytelling is about in his own way, sort of like David Lynch without the dream logic and about thirty more buckets of the red stuff. I recommend "Audition" and "Ichi," but skip "One Missed Call," his ill-advised foray into traditional J-horror which plays like a warmed-over "Ringu."
