In the tradition of such genre parodies as AIRPLANE!, THE NAKED GUN, and SPACEBALLS, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes on the teen horror flick with SCARY MOVIE, a campy, riotous send-up of everything from the SCREAM and HALLOWEEN franchises to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, CARRIE, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. In a small town, a copycat is reenacting the SCREAM murders, and local reporter Gail Hailstorm will do just about anything to get the story. The six high school students who ran over a man on a sharp curve the year before think the killer is out for revenge, but sweet and innocent Cindy Campbell believes that the madman might just lurk a lot closer to home. Cowritten by Shawn and Marlon Wayans (and four others), the script leaves no cliché unturned; in addition to the horror parodies, the film also spoofs such teen sex comedies as AMERICAN PIE and such hit films as THE SIXTH SENSE, THE MATRIX, and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. The film never lets up in its striking re-creations of classic scenes, and it never passes up the chance for a joke, no matter how crude. The young, attractive cast looks like it just jumped out of DAWSON'S CREEK, playing everything up to the hilt--and beyond. [More]

Reviews for Scary Movie
The appeal seems to lie less in laughter than in respect for the filmmakers' irreverence as viewers sit back and think, "I can't believe they showed that!"
If you're hoping to forget your troubles for 90 minutes, Scary Movie certainly does the job.
Does its spoofing with a blunt instrument instead of a scalpel, and it's engineered to appeal to the lowest instincts of its targeted adolescent audiences.
The humor in this movie is based on the concept that if enough jokes are fired off in a row, some of them will make you laugh. The concept works.
The kind of thing that leads to sleepless nights -- from severely bruised rib cages.
Scary Movie is a sporadically hilarious parody of teen horror movies that too frequently seems half-baked.
[The Wayans'] approach, incorporating the crude humor that has become so popular of late, generates an unfortunate digression from the point.
Utimately, there are some laughs, enough to justify a video rental at least.
The air of desperation is emphasised by the insistence on padding out horror-movie gags with crude Farrelly-style humour.
This is Dumb American Comedy at its best and well worth 90 minutes of your time.
I couldn’t help wishing I were watching that obscure little children’s fantasy instead. As I recall, it’s a lot funnier and more frightening than Scary Movie.
By far director/actor Keenen Ivory Wayans' best parody effort to date, primarily because he here taps into a rejuvenated genre and is given access to broader subject matter with universal appeal.
