With filmmaker Jon Moritsugu at the helm, SCUMROCK takes aim at the self-important musicians, but its comedic barbs are never lethal. In true independent spirit, Amy Malone does double duty, playing the lead singer of a band and acting as the film's director of photography. Kyp Malone (of Brooklyn rock band TV on the Radio) steps into the beat-up shoes of a filmmaker questioning his art. Eschewing the indie filmmaking trend of using digital video, Moritsugu made SCUMROCK using only analog Hi8 equipment. The director's choice gives the film an appropriately gritty look. Moritsugu's ambitious movie won awards and praise at the New York and Chicago Underground Film Festivals. [More]

Reviews for Scumrock
Will only rock the worlds of similarly youthful boho types on alt-cinema sideroutes.
This is a quick-witted, smartly poignant effort from someone who's earned his indie cred and has hit upon a rich new vein for counterculture comedy: slacker desperation.
Moritsugu's ending pulls his two major story lines to a surprisingly poignant close.
Comes off as a tired rehashing of the director's '90s-era DIY creations.
The characters in this video, denizens of the San Francisco art fringe, seem like they're heavily sedated.
