Seducing Doctor Lewis is a beguiling story of a ragtag fishing community on a tiny, impoverished island who must persuade a young Montreal-based doctor (David Boutin) to live in their town in order to get a much-needed new factory. Over a one-month trial period, the villagers try to satisfy his every need and convince him that their town offers all the charms of a thriving metropolis. Led by their mayor, Germain Lesage (Raymond Bouchard), the villagers rise to the challenge with good-hearted duplicity. However, as their deception continues, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Just as Doctor Lewis begins to respond to the simple “authenticity” of the village, the question arises: how will he feel when he finds out it’s based on lies? The directorial debut of Jean-François Pouliot, Seducing Doctor Lewis is a charming and funny tale, as well as a wry meditation on truth and falsehood. Seducing Doctor Lewis (“La Grande Séduction”) has the rare distinction of being selected for Sundance (Audience Award Winner, World Cinema), Cannes (Closing Night, Director’s Fortnight) and Toronto (Special Presentation). In French Canada, it grossed over eight million dollars, topping even The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix Reloaded, Pirates of the Caribbean and fellow home grown hit The Barbarian Invasions. It went on to be nominated for thirteen Jutra Awards (French-Canada’s Oscar), winning seven, and recently was nominated for eleven Genie Awards (Canadian Oscars). -- © Wellspring Media [More]

The first feature directed by Jean-François Pouliot finds humor in small-town idiosyncrasies, and also in economic hardship.

Before approaching the end of the film the seduction of the doctor is not that important because by that time the audience has already fallen under the spell.

Working with Ken Scott's clever script, Pouliot did exactly what he set out to do: Tell a whimsical story with the perfect balance of humour and heart.

Everything about this movie is quaint - the village, the people, the charm... The people of St. Marie will seduce you as well.

Buoyed by nostalgia for a vanishing way of life, but it's not sentimental about it.

The story isn't as funny as it tries to be, but it grows increasingly winning as it goes along.

A genuine feel-good movie -- nothing memorable, nothing brilliant, but guaranteed to put you in a good mood.

La Gran Seducción es como St. Marie-La-Mauderne: una isla perdida que intenta (y casi siempre logra) seducir con pocos recursos y mucho ingenio.

Clearly manipulative, but like an elongated, French-speaking episode of 'The Andy Griffith Show,' it mostly manages not to be cloying.

However much Pouliot tries to promote a variant on "The Full Monty"'s message about dignity and self-worth, he comes out with an endearing tale for the uncritical.
