"you'd scarcely know the world was ending if the characters didn't keep bringing it up."-I'm failing to see the point of this statement; of course everyone would be talking about nothing else and many things would keep happening just the same or similarly.

His point is that if it was not for the script, the rest of the world is just a little TOO normal for a place where everyone is facing imminent death. Sure, some people might act normal, but there would probably be a lot of pandemonium too.
